Malvern Tractor Show
25/26th February 2017
Following a casual conversation with one of the Allis-Chalmers Owners Club members I have somehow ended up with the job
of producing future editions of your magazine, so a few words
by way of an introduction seem appropriate. I started collecting 'scrap', as stationary engines and tractors that we now value,
were then known, before I left school in 1967. Along
the way an interest in literature developed from the days when
it could be picked up off the dealers' stands at County Shows
and carted home in full bags. My foremost interests have always
been in steam, crawler tractors and their related implements.
That's where Allis-Chalmers crept in. I have always had a soft
spot for a good, wide gauge Allis M!!
Allis-Chalmers in their hey-day was a massive operation, making
a range of products from a household refrigerator, flour mills, crushers through to massive electrical installations. The Hoover
and Grand Coolee Dams both have Allis equipment installed.
They were a major contractor to the Manhattan Project which
gives an indication of manufacturing skills within the company
at that time.
It is my intention over a period of time to feature many of these products, whilst at the same time not forgetting the full range
of agricultural machinery and allied equipment produced in the
US, the UK and other facilities.
I am the editor of the Steam Plough Times, member of the Peterborough Farm Machinery Club, a contributor to Tractor and Farming Heritage magazine, Old Tractor and Vintage Tractor as
well as American Old Iron. I have published books on
